At approximately 11:54pm, our department was notified of a stove fire on the bottom floor of a 12-unit apartment building. Engine 653 arrived on scene approximately 5 to 7 minutes later to find a three story apartment building with heavy smoke coming from the front and rear doors. Crews from Engine 653 conducted an aggressive interior fire attack and extinguished the fire rapidly, while additional personnel from Engine 653 and crews from Truck 650 conducted a rapid search, rescuing two residents from other apartments as well as a pet bird. Firefighters from West Peoria Fire Protection District, Dunlap Community Fire Protection District, and Peoria IL Fire Department assisted crews with additional searches, overhaul, and ventilation. Limestone Township Fire Protection District and Chillicothe, IL Fire Department were available to cover additional calls in the village. Advanced Medical Transport was also available to provide medical assistance to both firefighters and residents of the building. The cause of the fire was found to be cooking related and severely damaged the kitchen area of the initial apartment. No injuries have been reported and all fire crews have cleared the scene.
